Hepatology Treatments in Kolkata
Expert Hepatology Care for Complex Liver Disorders
Liver diseases often progress silently until significant damage has already occurred. Under the expert care of Dr Abhishek Banerjee, patients receive precise diagnoses and minimally invasive hepatology treatments designed to control disease progression, protect liver function, and support long-term health.

Hepatitis B/C
Management
Hepatitis B and C are chronic viral infections that progressively damage the liver, often remaining asymptomatic for years. Without specialist intervention, both can advance to cirrhosis or hepatocellular carcinoma. Current antiviral therapies can achieve viral suppression in Hepatitis B and a complete cure in most Hepatitis C cases.

Cirrhosis
Cirrhosis is the end-stage scarring of liver tissue resulting from prolonged damage caused by hepatitis, alcohol or metabolic liver disease. While fibrosis is irreversible, disease progression can be halted with targeted treatment. Specialist management focuses on treating the underlying cause, managing complications and preventing liver decompensation.

Jaundice
Jaundice — characterised by yellowing of the skin, eyes and dark urine — results from elevated bilirubin levels in the blood. It is a clinical sign, not a diagnosis. Causes range from viral hepatitis and bile duct obstruction to haemolysis and acute liver failure, each requiring distinct specialist investigation and treatment.

Hepatitis
Hepatitis refers to inflammation of the liver and may be caused by viral infection (A, B, C, D, E), alcohol, autoimmune conditions or drug-induced liver injury. Presentation varies from mild fatigue and nausea to acute liver failure. Accurate typing and staging through blood tests and imaging guide the most effective treatment pathway.

Alcohol Associated Liver Disease)
Alcohol Associated Liver Disease encompasses a spectrum from simple hepatic steatosis to alcoholic hepatitis and cirrhosis. It is directly linked to the quantity and duration of alcohol consumption. Early-stage disease is largely reversible by stopping alcohol completely. Advanced stages require specialist management of complications, including portal hypertension and liver failure.

Acute Liver Failure
Acute liver failure is a rare but life-threatening condition characterised by rapid loss of liver function — evidenced by coagulopathy and encephalopathy — in the absence of pre-existing liver disease. Common causes include viral hepatitis, paracetamol toxicity and autoimmune hepatitis. It requires immediate hospitalisation, intensive monitoring and specialist intervention.

Fatty Liver Disease (MASLD)
MASLD (Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease), formerly known as NAFLD (non-alcoholic fatty liver disease), involves excess fat accumulation in liver cells and is linked to obesity, insulin resistance, dyslipidaemia, and Type 2 diabetes. If untreated, it can progress from simple steatosis to steatohepatitis, fibrosis, and cirrhosis.
